Thank you, Uzi-Comedian.

Back on the ol' Sam & Max track, someone over at the Telltale forums found some juicy bits of unused dialogue from City That Dare Not Sleep, which suggests that the episode was gonna be a lot different. Spoiler'd for those of you (Uzi) that haven't finished the season.
Spoiler:
Apparently music was gonna have a big role in the finale. The Narrator describes it as "A Free-form Jazz Odyssey" and has the player use Side B of a record. Plus, he seems to be narrating the episode's ending, which makes it seem like he might not have originally been the villain, nor have died. Speaking of dying, looks like both Sam and Max were gonna die originally.

I finished Beyond the Alley of the Dolls (and have gotten a little less than halfway through The City What Don't Sleep), but I don't want to write a full review. What can I say that hasn't already been said a billion billion times?
So, instead, I'm just going to explain why it's not Number One on my list, and currently subsides below Chariots of the Dogs (which would've been a good name for this episode, by the way.) There's a few reasons, but mainly it's because most of my favorite parts of this episode were also in Chariots of the Dogs, but more so.
For example, when we get to hear about what happened to Bosco (who I really wish was in this series. Same with Sybil, but she came in later.) But Chariots of the Dogs was pretty much all about Bosco! So it still wins.
I like Flint Paper in this episode. But I still think that nothing can compare to him, Sam, and Max busting into Bosco's red-lit store, shooting their guns like a trio of maniacal...uh...maniacs. That is STILL my favorite part of any Telltale Episode ever.
Being a Geek at heart, I liked a lot of the cool technology here. Do I even have to mention why CoTD wins this one?
However, there were three great things that Chariots of the Dogs didn't have, which made this a hard decision for me.
The first was Dr. Norrington/Yog-Soggoth who, in addition to being a massive season-wide plot reveal, is funny as heck, especially in his relationship with Papierwaite.
The second is the mystery of trying to figure out who the Clone Master is. I got it wrong-my guess was Momma Bosco. The suspiciousness of Stinky was too obvious a choice, and I knew that, while she would have some secret, it would end up being actually a pretty lame one. And speaking of guessing, I knew that Mr. S was Sal for a while (pretty much after The Penal Zone, when it turned out that it WASN'T Skun-k'ape.)
And the third was the Seance, which was also very funny and an interesting way to use the psychic powers. Also, it included Superball. YAY SUPERBALL!

Makes sense.
I too guessed that Sal was Mr. S all the way back at the end of the Penal Zone.

So what did you think of the way the clone master was revealed? I thought it was genius. At that point in the game I had been to the dock so many times and had to distract those Dogglegangers with Charlie so many times that I was just sick of it. When I had to do it before the big reveal, my first thought was "Okay, I've done this ten times! Why are we interrupting the big reveal with this stupid thing!?" That just made it all the more awesome and unexpected when Charlie interrupted the annoying interruption.

It was. And I was afraid that, for the Clone Master, they would make up some terrible new character and it would be like, "Oh come on. Really? How the heck were we supposed to guess THAT?"
But this was brilliant. It seems obvious in retrospect (if you use Psychic Ventriloquism on Dr. Norrington before everything goes pear-shaped, he mentions how creepy he was, and that Junior never liked Charlie), but it was nigh impossible to guess going forwards.

Yeah, I was happy it wasn't some new character.
Though at the same time, I was a little disappointed that no new characters were introduced in that episode. I think it had something to do with my reading reviews that mentioned a "high-pitched vaudeville act" (AKA Charlie's show at the Statch of Liberty) and having a hilarious image of a vaudeville musical number featuring a group of Soda Popperesque vaudeville singers in my head.

Played more of the City That Dares Not Sleep. It is far and away my favorite episode (and I'll explain why later.) I guessed that the Narrator was evil from the get-go, but the Super-Ego thing was a twist.
AND I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING PAST THAT TWIST (I had to save & quit right after), SO NO SPOILERS, OKAY PEOPLETYPES?

I thought the Super-Ego thing was an excellent twist.
Have you used all the dialog options with him right after the twist, or did you literally quit immediately after it was revealed? Because I wanna mention a line from that dialog that is one of my favorite quotes ever.

I did get to use all of the dialog options. I assume you're talking about the angel one?

The Narrator: Oh very well, you have forced me to reveal myself, Sam I am actually an agent of a much higher calling coming to only you and Max in times of peril... I believe you mortals refer me, as an "angel".

Sam: Wait, really?

The Narrator: Of course not, that would be stupid! I'm a physical manifestation of the Super-Ego of a hyperkinetic rabbity thing that has been turned into a giant, shambling Elder God by an evil toybox full of psychic toys! Sometimes the simple answer really is the correct one.

Re: The Official SBtF Sam & Max Topic!

Post by Uzi-Bazooka on Sat Dec 11, 2010 11:28 am

At last, I have finished The City That Dares Not Sleep. It is officially my favorite episode of all of the Telltale Sam & Max series, for too many reasons to describe...in anything but a somewhat-disorganized list, that is!
-At first, I thought "Oh, greeat. An episode without Max. That'll be about as funny as a 1040 Tax Return." But then they introduced one of the best parts of this entire episode: THE MAX SPORES! Even though they're dementedly evil and want to kill us all in our sleep, you just can't help but love them.
-A great cast of characters, including Lincoln and Sybil, who I missed throughout this entire season; the C.O.P.S., who I always find hilarious ("That is one rabbit who will be multiplying...into millions and millions of tiny pieces"); and Featherly, who is...well, Featherly!
-I was right: The Narrator WAS the final evil villain (well...sorta.) But I guessed that he would be the one to betray Sam & Max, since he said "One of the characters you see before you," and he was standing right there.
-I did NOT guess that he would be the Super-Ego. Very nicely done reveal, there.
-Lots of hilarity-a nice change from Alley of the Dolls, which I felt tried to be a little too dramatic at times. This was incredibly dramatic, while still being really funny. I especially loved...
-Getting to be inside Max's body, with all its weird not-weirdness.
-Max's ideas for novels were also hilarious.
-I also, as you know, love Flint Paper. And he had a huge role in this, doing what he does best-beating the ever-loving crap out of some inter-species thugs.
-Oh, and speaking of which, Girl Stinky finally died! It might be just me, but I NEVER liked her. She's annoying, she's whiny, she's manipulative, and I felt that her story throughout the season got played up more than really necessary.
-CHARIOTS OF THE DOGS SAVED THE DAY! Yes, even if it has been ousted from it's place at the top, I still love CoTD, and when the time elevator came back with Kinda Parallel Universe Max, I jumped for joy (not quite literally, but pretty close.)
-Which, of course, brings me to the ending, which was fabulous. I laughed, I cried, and Superball even showed his first-ever bit of emotion!

In fact, pretty much the only part I didn't like was Sal's death. Sal was one of my favorite characters who got introduced this season, and I'm gonna miss him. But at least it was done well.

In conclusion, a great conclusion.

Actually the bit I was talking about was..

Sam: I didn't know Max had a Super-Ego.
Narrator: Yes, well, you're fat.

The matter-of-fact way he said it cracked it up, and it was a nice finale of sorts to the "Sam is fat" running joke throughout the season. Almost every dialog choice with the Narrator cracked me up though. Anyone else catch the Pinky & The Brain reference?

By the way, I take it you liked the scene in the cloning chamber with Flint, Stinky, and Skun-ka'pe? That was the highlight of the episode for me. I particularly liked how Girl Stinky's real origins as a mermaid were revealed. It was ridiculously nonsensical and pretty much represented exactly what I love about Sam & Max.

Oh, yeah. That one was good too. Also, "So you're a Super-Ego?" "Well, I don't like to brag, but I AM pretty rad."

TW wrote:Almost every dialog choice with the Narrator cracked me up though. Anyone else catch the Pinky & The Brain reference?
Of course! I'm kind of surprised anyone else did.

Yes to your last comment, and yes to your first. I love the way Flint handled the whole thing-explaining every detail and just sort of nonchalantly killing hordes of Ape Minions. I also love how, while Skun-k'ape's ambitions get bigger and bigger (including, in one dialog, every possible dimension of reality itself), all Girl Stinky ever wants, or ever has wanted, is the diner.

By the way, which ending did you get?
In case you hadn't heard, the ending is different depending on whether you said "Crimefighting" or "Adventuring" in response to a question earlier in the game.

I'm just curious which ending they're gonna use to start Season 4.

They'll probably do something completely different. Especially since, in most cases, Sam & Max moves in real time:when each episode comes out once a month, there's usually one in-canon month in between each episode. And in Season 3, they refer to all Season 2 events as "from a few years back."
The exception to this is, of course, Season 3, which pretty much seems to take place all in one day.

Good point. And besides, they wouldn't use the time travel thing from the adventuring ending with Back to the Future: The Game coming out.

Actually, 8 days. There was a week gap between Beyond the Alley of the Dolls and City That Dares Not Sleep.

Yeah, I remembered that AFTER I wrote that post, and debated for a whole 2.5 seconds whether or not to change my post, before deciding that I didn't care enough...or at all, and did something cool instead, probably involving lemons, beef, or lemon beef.
And that's pretty much my life, folks.

Welp, my Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse DVD is in!
The commentary is great, especially the bonus commentary on They Stole Max's Brain featuring Majus. There really is tons of commentary, with two of the episodes featuring two tracks and three of them featuring three.
Though I'm saddened by the lack of concept art. There's nothing new. Just the same eleven pieces that have been made available by Telltale over the season.

I have never cared about concept art, myself. Though I can't wait until the day that I can sell random doodles of crap for large amounts of cash money.

I mostly just wanted the concept art so I can make better custom icons for the episodes. The art of Charlie Ho-Tep from Sam's notebook ain't quite cutting it for me.
